About the city

History…

Yaroslavl was founded in about 1010 by prince Yaroslav the Wise, the son of Vladimir Sviyatoslavovich. Prince Yaroslav conquered the lands of pagan tribes. He killed the sacred pagan animal – the bear – with his poleax, after which he ordered to build a timber fortress at the point where the river Kotorosl flows into the Volga ("Bear’s Corner"), thus starting a new town to be named after himself. Due to numerous trade routes Yaroslavl began quick developing and in 1218 it became the capital town of an independent principality. Erection of architectural ensembles and churches decorated with frescoes and elaborate glazed tiles turned Yaroslavl into one of the most beautiful cities of Russia.
